Margie Ruth Garrett

March 3, 1930 — November 9, 2013

Margie Ruth Clayton was born on March 3, 1930, in Sulphur, Oklahoma, the daughter of John T. Clayton and Bernice Pugh Clayton. Although she lived in Sulphur and Fox for a brief time during her childhood, she has called Wilson her home for the past 70 years. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1948. She married Leonard Silas Garrett on December 21, 1947. He preceded her in death in 1993. Margie was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, John Clayton and Perry Clayton; and 1 sister, Velma Miller.

Margie is survived by her 7 children: Patsy Emerson and her husband, Leon, of Wilson, OK, Tommy Garrett and wife, Ruby, of Ardmore, OK, Jerry (Jug) Garrett and wife, Deanne, of Burneyville, OK, Debby Garrett of Wilson, OK, Peggy Eaves and husband, Roy, of Marlow, OK, Sally Mitchell and husband, Doug of Madill, OK, and Tammy McArthur and husband, Jim of Wilson, OK.; 13 grandchildren: Kelly and Greg Whatley of Wilson, OK, Kenny Emerson and wife, Robin of Wilson, OK, Kevin Garrett and wife Aimee of Ardmore, OK, Kari Russick and husband, Rick, of Oklahoma City, OK, Jerry Ray Garrett and wife, Cassie, of Burneyville, OK, John T. Garrett and wife, Carmen of Davis, OK, Mikey Eaves and wife, Camie, of Marlow, OK, Kacey Chandler and husband, Billy, of Durant, OK, Shanna Smith of Bartlesville, OK, Josh Mitchell and wife, Colby, of Lone Grove, OK, Jeanea Mitchell of Madill, OK, Amanda Doss and husband, Alen, of Lone Grove, OK, and Andrew McArthur and wife, Meagan, of Lone Grove, OK; and 20 great-grandchildren: Kale, Keedric, Tre, Dalton, Dakota, Autumn, Paige, Parker, Paetyn, Parri, Robert, Crue, Saylar, Ryder, Ensley, Jake, Ryan, Addison, Tripp, and Asher. At the time of her death, she was looking forward to welcoming 2 additional great-grandchildren and her first great-great grandchild into the family during the coming year. She is also survived by 2 sisters: Betty Jo Daniel of Tishomingo, OK and Mary Hightower and her husband, Reagan of Stratford, OK; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Granny Margie devoted her life to her family, her friends, and her community. She worked tirelessly for Wilson Public Schools for 23 years before retiring in 2003. She served her community as a Wilson Alumni/Restoration Committee Founder for many years. In 2005 the Wilson “Old Gym” was renamed and dedicated to her as the “Margie Garrett Old Gym.” She loved the Wilson Eagles and remained a loyal supporter. Through these associations, she made life-long friends. Margie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilson being baptized on Mothers Day, May 10, 1987 by Rev. Darel Bunch. She will be missed by all who knew and greatly loved her.

“Granny Margie’s” 7 grandsons will honor her by serving as pallbearers. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2013, from 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home.
