A celebration of the life of Mrs. Anna Lois Clark Cumpton, 85, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wilson with Rev. Jason Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Hewitt Cemetery of Wilson. Services are under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home.
While Anna’s family lived in Earlsboro, Oklahoma she was born at her grandmother’s house on North 5th Street in Wilson on January 17, 1929 to Leslie James Clark and Alice Lois (Gibbs) Clark. She departed this life on Sunday, June 1st, in Ardmore.
The family moved to a farm south of Wilson in 1933 and Anna went to school in Wilson, riding the bus that came by the farm. On July 11, 1946 Anna married her lifelong friend and sweetheart, Carl Marion Cumpton, at the First Baptist Church in Wilson and shared sixty-four years wonderful years together before Carl’s passing on September 21, 2010.
Anna worked with her mother at Cumpton and Clark Dry Goods store on Main Street which her dad and Carl established in 1946. In 1950 Anna and Carl built a house on what was then South Rotary, the house Anna and Carl lived in throughout their lives. In 1947, their first son, James Carl, was born followed by Larry David in 1959. The store was sold in 1980 at which time Anna became an unofficial “caregiver” to any and all in Wilson who needed assistance of any kind, whether it was taking care of those who were ill, taking food to those in need, or serving many funeral meals at the First Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Anna was a gracious hostess to all those who came to her home and was always concerned about putting others before herself. She supported Carl fully with his many and varied Boy Scout responsibilities and projects as well as his involvement with the City of Wilson. In addition, she was a lifetime member of the Wilson Historical Society, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a Cub Scout Den Leader, and a member of RSVP. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all.
In addition to Carl, Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie James Clark, August 10, 1966 and Alice Lois Gibbs Clark, November 10, 2005; her sister, Juanita Roberts, September 13, 2010 and her husband, G. C. Roberts, August 14, 2011; Carl’s sister, Mary Regina Cumpton Gandy, October 2, 2004, and her husband, Carol Lewis Gandy, February 10, 1997; and daughter-in-law, Linda Owen Cumpton, October 13, 2000.
She is survived by her sons, Jim, of Ardmore and Larry and his wife, Deonna of Norman. She is survived by a granddaughter, Lauryn Cumpton of Healdton, three grandsons and their wives and children: John and Stephanie Cumpton, Carlie and Jackson of Houston, Texas; Jason and Stacy Cumpton, Jacob and Caleb of Edmond, Oklahoma; and Phillip and Denisha Cumpton, Hunter, Leah and Anthony of Healdton. Other survivors include nieces and nephews, George and Carole Gandy Pinches, Ardmore; Mark and Peggy Roberts, Western Springs, Illinois; Gary and Kathy Roberts, Magnolia, Texas; and Jeff and Dana Roberts, Midland, Texas. She is also survived by several cousins, great-nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
Bearers will be Gary Claxton, Jack Glazener, Stan Harris, Mike Hisey, Jerry Mashore and George Pinches.
For those wishing to memorialize Anna, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, the Wilson Historical Society and Museum, or the Arbuckle Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
