Donald Ray Mitchell

Donald Ray Mitchell, affectionately known as Don or Donnie, passed away on September 9, 2026. Born in Homer, Louisiana, on October 14, 1950, Don lived a life defined by devoted service, deep love for his family, and a gift for bringing warmth and laughter wherever he went. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Gray Funeral Home and Crematory.

Don attended High School in Comanche Oklahoma where he graduated in 1968. Soon afterwards he answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army on September 17, 1968, during the Vietnam War. He served until June 16, 1971, then re-enlisted into the United States Army on October 29, 1974. After a long and distinguished military career, Don retired from the Army on January 31, 1992, having achieved the rank of First Sergeant. His many years of service reflected his courage, dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to others.

In 1991, Don moved to Oklahoma to be closer to family and to raise his children. Family was the heart of his life. He shared 54 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Charlotte Mitchell, whom he married on February 24, 1972. Their enduring marriage was built on love, loyalty, shared memories, and a lifetime of standing beside one another.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Don was a loving father to daughter, Virginia Mitchell, and her son Logan Mitchell; daughter, Jessica Mahaffey and her husband Neil and their children Leila Taylor and husband Timothy, Bridget, Keith, Henry, Augustus, and Amelia Mahaffey; daughter Sarah Voreis and her husband Jason, and their son Cooper Voreis. He is also a proud great-grandfather to Miles Taylor and Amara Taylor.

Those who knew Don will remember him not only for his honorable military service, but also for the simple things that brought him joy. He loved fishing, raising and showing pigs and spending time with his grandchildren. He had a fondness for tall tales, lively conversations about politics and breakfast at the coffee shop. Whether sharing a story, offering an opinion or enjoying a quiet moment with family, Don had a way of making ordinary days memorable. 

Above all, Don will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal brother, respected soldier, and cherished friend. His legacy lives on in the family he loved and the country he faithfully served, and the countless stories and memories that will continue to be shared around tables, at the coffee shop, and wherever those who loved him gather.

Don's life was one of service, family, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
