Gary was born May 31, 1943, at Zaneis to the late Mr. James Edward Claxton and Mrs. Shirley Ruth (Harper) Claxton. He departed this life April 23, 2025 at his home in Wilson.

A steadfast presence in the lives of all who knew him, Gary was a man defined by his dedication to work and his passions. Raised in Zaneis, Gary's early years were marked by his education, culminating in his graduation with the class of 1961. Following his schooling, Gary took to the open road, initially working alongside his father as a truck driver, where he traversed the country and developed a deep love for the freedom and adventure that came with long-haul trucking. His strong work ethic eventually led him to a fulfilling role as an equipment operator; a position he approached with the same dedication he brought to every endeavor throughout his life. Gary proudly served in the Army National Guard for around four years.  In his younger days, he was known for his adventurous spirit and love of rodeo, particularly relishing the thrill of riding bulls. This passion for the rodeo world was complemented by his affinity for agriculture, as he took great pride in raising Brahman cattle. These pursuits brought him joy and satisfaction, providing him not only with a livelihood but also a connection to the land he cherished.

Preceding him in death are his parents; daughter, Gera McClanahan; and Carolyn Hobbs.

Survivors include his sons, Kenny Claxton and J.J. Claxton; brother, Kerry Claxton; grandchildren, Emily and Allison McClanahan and Kourtney Claxton with one on the way; son-in-law, Ryan McClanahan; niece, Kristi Castle; numerous other family and many friends.

Pallbearers will be Terry Claxton, Sam Claxton, Charley Claxton, Tim Claxton, Jeb Hammons, and Zack Hammons.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M., Sunday evening, at the Alexander Gray Funeral Home Chapel in Wilson.
