James was raised in Healdton, attended school at Healdton and Rexroat, where he developed a strong sense of community. His dedication to service was evident at a young age when he joined the Army National Guard. Over the course of six years, he excelled as an armored personnel carrier operator in a heavy wheeled vehicle and earned recognition as a talented marksman. He was honorably discharged on March 4, 1966, carrying with him the pride of having served his country. Here, James found joy in fishing, skillfully running jug lines and becoming known for his fish cooking skills. James had a passion for repairing old boats and often found solace in his shop, where he could listen to music and reflect on life.
