Wilson – Memorial Services for Mr. Richard Joseph “Cooney” Young, 85 of Ardmore are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday at Alexander Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Wilson. Inurnment will follow at Hewitt Cemetery in Wilson.
Cooney was born on May 31, 1940, in Jennings, Louisiana, to the late Mr. Armos Joseph “Blackie” Young and Mrs. Hilda (Benoit) Young. He peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at a healthcare facility in Ardmore.
Raised in Jennings, Cooney dedicated many years to working offshore in the oilfield. Later, he pursued vocational training in mechanics, which led him to work on vehicles and serve as a handyman. In 1972, he relocated to Ardmore, where he continued his handyman work and spent years as a dishwasher at Baldwin’s Café. Cooney had a love for dancing and fishing and was known for his excellent cooking skills. He was a sociable individual who warmly welcomed everyone he met. Additionally, he was a committed member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 40 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, A.J. Young, Jr.; and a special aunt, Marie “Shorty” Thurman.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Alice Beck of Ardmore; cousin Karen Thurman; friend and helper, David Carter; numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Honorary bearers are Tommy Polston, David Carter, Chuck Greene and Jimmy Ward.
