Simon - Ruben Lee Bates, aged 77, of Simon, Oklahoma, passed away on January 7, 2026. He was born on November 13, 1948, in Antlers, Oklahoma, to Theodore Ray Bates and Eastleen Gibson Bates.
Ruben spent much of his upbringing south of Wilson and graduated from Wilson High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy on June 2, 1967, where he honorably served for 20 years. During his military career, he attained the rank of Master Chief with the Seabees, contributing to the construction and development of various projects for the Navy. His service allowed him the opportunity to travel extensively, during which he met Lea Mariola Penaranda in the Philippines. They were united in marriage on July 23, 1973, in San Antonio’s Zambales. Following his discharge, Ruben and Lea settled in Simon, Oklahoma, where they shared a happy life together until Lea's passing on May 10, 2022.
After his military service, Ruben devoted several years to the Ardmore Veterans Center as a nurse before retiring. He had a passion for painting, woodworking, and leatherwork, and was known for his skills as an exceptional teacher. An outdoor enthusiast, he cherished nature, collected rare items, and was an accomplished cook.
Ruben is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lea, and brother, James Albert Bates. He is survived by his son, Arawi Bates (Leighann); sister, Coleen Gunter; brother, Kenneth Bates (Brenda); grandchildren, Blayden Bates and Zoe Clayburn; step-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Isaiah, and Breann; and two step-great-grandchildren, Legend and Legacy.
